The Two Lights

Lytherra is lit by two sources that never meet. Everything in the world is positioned by which light reaches it and which does not.تُضيء ليثيرّا من مصدرين لا يلتقيان أبداً. كل شيء في العالم يُحدد موضعه بحسب أي نور يصله وأي نور لا يصله.

Lytherra has no sun. It has two lights, set at opposing ends of a sky that does not turn. One is old and low and the color of oxidized gold. The other is white and distant and makes no promise of warmth. Between them runs a band the inhabitants call the seam, where neither light fully reaches and both partly do.

Nothing in Lytherra is described by its place on a map. It is described by its light. A thing of the gold light is a thing with history, weight, and the kind of legitimacy that took a long time to earn. A thing of the white light is a thing that is clean, portable, and accountable to no one. Most of the world, and most of its trouble, lives in the seam between them.

The cosmology is not a backdrop to the stories. It is the constraint every story runs into.

ليس لليثيرّا شمس. لها نوران، موضوعان عند طرفين متقابلين من سماء لا تدور. أحدهما قديم ومنخفض ولونه لون الذهب المُصدّأ. والآخر أبيض وبعيد ولا يَعِد بأي دفء. وبينهما يمتد شريط يسميه السكان الدَّرز، حيث لا يصل أي من النورين كاملاً، ويصل كلاهما جزئياً. لا يُوصف أي شيء في ليثيرّا بموضعه على خريطة. بل يُوصف بنوره. الشيء من النور الذهبي شيء له تاريخ وثقل، وله ذلك النوع من الشرعية الذي استغرق كسبه وقتاً طويلاً. والشيء من النور الأبيض شيء نظيف وقابل للحمل ولا يُحاسَب أمام أحد. أما أكثر العالم، وأكثر متاعبه، فيعيش في الدَّرز بينهما. هذه الكوزمولوجيا ليست خلفية للقصص. هي القيد الذي تصطدم به كل قصة.
